6.43 Door within a door in Hungarian carriage house

6.43.Hungary-4-detail-n Highlights Relevant to Sustainable Design:

We can rethink windows, doors, and car access.

The garage “carriage house” gate, illustrated on the left side, is particularly interesting to me because it has a door within a door. One door is for people, while the larger pair is for a carriage or now a car. All three doors are made of wood, detailed with spaces for air to circulate and draft at the top. Before electricity and roll-up garage door technology, this was a low-tech solution that integrated two functions in one masonry opening. The air circulation was most likely to ventilate the space for the horses that pulled the carriages. Form follows function and nets out with an aesthetic and lasting result.

Author and illustrator: Charlie Szoradi is an architect, inventor, and the CEO of Independence LED Lighting. He writes about many other topics related to carriage houses, ventilation and a door within a door through his extensive travels around the world.
